Shared Business Capabilities
Running a Flock typically requires all of the Business Capabilities depicted in the figure below. A Business Capability represents the ability for a Flock to do something and exists out of a combination of roles, processes, information, and tools.
Flock founders and members should be able to focus on those business capabilities that provide most value to their customers, also known as core capabilities. Therefore flocks.digital provides a menu of Shared Business Capabilities from which all Flocks can select, alleviating individual Flocks from the burden of having to manage these non-core capabilities.
Color | Description |
---|---|
green | Core capabilities of a Flock and the responsibility of each Flock individually. |
blue | Shared Business Capabilities of which the responsibility can be shared with flocks.digital and other Flocks. |
Shared Business Capabilities are low-differentiating business capabilities, meaning they provide no or little differentiating value to the core digital service offering of a Flock from a customer’s perspective compared to competitors.
Therefore it is beneficial to share them with other Flocks, allowing a Flock to focus on providing the best digital services to its customers. Sharing these business capabilities also brings additional benefits, such as economies of scale, volume discounts, …
Shared Business Capabilities are facilitated and provided by the flocks.digital platform.
They can be managed as a shared responsibility between individual Flocks and flocks.digital or mainly by flocks.digital, depending on the type of Shared Business Capability.
They can be executed by flocks.digital, a dedicated Flock or outsourced to a 3rd party.
The use of Shared Business Capabilities provided by flocks.digital is optional and can be chosen per Shared Business Capability. A Flock offloads one or more Shared Business Capabilities to the flocks.digital platform instead of performing them autonomously. Handling a Shared Business Capability individually means a Flock has full freedom in choosing how it will be implemented, but comes with a risk of having less time and resources to spend on the core digital services a Flock provides to its customers.
The long term objective is to operate Shared Business Capabilities as Business-capability platforms, where a platform is operated by a Flock. Mission control is performed by Flocks.digital, responsible to make sure all Business-capability platforms effectively work together. Platform thinking should bring self-service to individual Flocks, who are the internal business customer of the Shared Business Capabilities, avoiding that Flocks that manage Business-capability platform become a bottleneck.
